WARRNAMBOOL karters defended their home bitumen at Lake Gillear in the second round of Victorian Country Series racing.

The weekend event doubled as the annual Wolf Gottlewski Memorial meeting, honouring one of Warrnambool Kart Club’s past members and presidents.

About 1000 spectators watched the action at Lake Gillear over two days, according to club president Gary Shiells, with more than 150 competitors registered across 15 classes.

“The sun was shining and we had plenty of entries,” Shiells said.

“There were no big bingles and all the racing was pretty clean.”

He said Warrnambool’s entrants continued to perform well in round two of the series.

“We’ve got a good local contingent in the races, all doing pretty well,” Shiells said. “Billy Askew was pretty impressive, winning all six of his finals this year so far in the restricted 125 super heavy.

“Jack Owen and his cousin Max Owen finished one and two in one of their heats.

“Corey McCullagh is a local and finished second in the TAG 125 heavy, after winning in round one.”

Askew was first over the line in four of six races across the weekend.

Other local karters finished strong, including Jake Hose and Joseph Clough, placing first and second overall in the restricted 125 light, and Barry Clough, who took third in the restricted 125 heavy finals.

The drivers now have about a month to prepare for the third round of the series at Horsham on May 18.

The final three rounds will be hosted by Hamilton, Portland and Ballarat clubs.
