King of the karts will defend his crown - From the Townsville Bulletin

THERE’S no chance of a championship hangover for V8 Supercars aspirant Luke Flynn as the Townsville Kart Club kicks off its season at Sun City Raceway this weekend.

Seemingly no time after he lifted the trophy last campaign, rubber will again be burning at the Bohle track.

About 100 competitors from around the region are expected to compete.

But most eyes will be on the big boys in the high- octane Sportsman Light 125cc category, with Flynn out to defend the title he clinched in November last year.

“But it’s not always about the trophies for me,” he said. “It’s just as much about the racing – getting all the younger boys to come up and provide and make me work harder.”

Which is just as well for the ambitious 21- year- old driver.

With Brandon Doolan, who pushed Flynn for the crown last year, returning and veteran racer Glen Stewart stepping into the 125s after taking out the TAG 100 in 2013, Flynn knows he won’t have it all his own way.

As he attempts to follow in the footsteps of V8 greats such as Jamie Whincup and Mark Winterbottom, who started their careers in karts, Flynn said being pushed was just what he needed.

“Ultimately I’d love ( to race in V8s) and we’ve ramped up our racing in the past two years … we travel all over the country … but it’s a money- driven sport,” Flynn said.

Stewart believes Flynn, who plans to compete in five state and national titles this year, can make his dreams a reality.

Practice and qualifying start about noon tomorrow before racing begins at 3pm.

Competition begins at 8am on Sunday. Entry for spectators is free.
