HUGE NUMBER OF ENTRIES FOR QUEENSLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Warwick and Southern Downs region of Queensland will be invaded by karters from all across the country for the Queensland State Championships next week.

The July 1-3 event has attracted just shy of 400 entries across 16 categories, which feature drivers from as young as seven years of age racing at speeds close to 100 km/h. For these youngsters the sport is as much about learning driving techniques and car control as it is winning.

The event will be the Warwick Kart Club’s largest event in its history and is the accumulation of hundreds of hours of work by the committee and club members.

“There is no doubt that these championships are the biggest event that we have hosted here at Warwick,” said Warwick kart Club President Bob Larance.

“Everyone in the club has been working tirelessly to ensure everything is in readiness for the championships.”

With 40 drivers entered in the Junior National Light category, for drivers aged between 12 and 16 years, the battle will be on from the start of qualifying.

One of the favourites for the victory is reigning champion Lachlan McHugh, however, the likes of Australian Champion James Golding, Jake Downs, Victorian Jake Klein and South Australian Luke Marquis will be out to spoil McHugh’s party.

With in excess of 1,000 people, consisting of drivers, mechanics and support crew, travelling to the event from various parts of the country, the championships will also provide a welcomed boost to the local economy.

“It is great to see so many racers from all across the country coming to the Warwick region for this event,” said Larance.

“Many of the teams and drivers will begin arriving early next week to begin practice from Wednesday morning and will stay through until Sunday when the finals will be contested.

“We hope to put on a great event for the competitors and look forward to seeing a lot of local Warwick residents coming out to check out the action across the weekend.”

Practice for the championships begins on Wednesday ahead of qualifying on Friday (July 1), heat races and the pre-finals on Saturday (July 2) ahead of the championship finals on Sunday (July 3).
