Toowoomba driver Tyler Greenbury added another championship victory to his ever-growing resume when he was victorious at the Queensland Open Sprint Kart Championships in Warwick on the weekend.

Greenbury led home Gold Coast driver James Macken in the Rotax Light category to secure the ninth state championship of his flourishing career.

“It’s been a good weekend,” said Greenbury.

“While it isn’t quite home, it’s not far away, so to have the best drivers from various parts of the country come here to compete has been great for the region.

“It’s been a while since I’ve won at a big event, my last big win was at the Queensland Championships last July, so to win here this weekend is a good boost for my confidence.”

After falling back during the early stages of the 20-lap championship final Macken made a late race charge to secure the runner-up placing ahead of Victorian Josh de Maio.

Greenbury almost made it two victories for the weekend when he lined up in the Clubman Light category against the likes of National Champion Cian Fothergill, Chris Hays, Ben Stewart, Macauley Jones and Jason Burns.

The dual National Champion battled for the lead of the final with Fothergill and Stewart throughout the duration of the event.  Unfortunately Greenbury came together with Fothergill on the final turn while attempting to steal the victory from the latter’s grasp.

With the leading duo almost coming to a stop on the exit of the final turn it allowed Stewart to snare the victory.  Greenbury crossed the line second ahead of Fothergill.

Sean Butcher secured another victory for the Darling Downs drivers with a domination of the Senior National Light category.

Butcher set the fastest qualifying time on Friday before enjoying victory in every race across the weekend – including a six-second win in the championship final.

William Yarwood

New South Wales driver Joseph Mawson and Forest Lake’s Brock Plumb were never more than a kart length apart in the 20-lap final of Junior Clubman.  Plumb shadowed Mawson’s every move until lap 18 when he made a move for the lead at the end of the main straight, only to have Mawson fight straight back.

The pair then came together on the last lap allowing South Australian Luke Marquis to take advantage and claim the first state championship of his career.

At the other end of the scale William Yarwood secured the 40th state championship of his illustrious career. The Brisbane driver won Rotax Heavy ahead of Kris Walton – 18 years after he won his first in the Junior National Light category in Ipswich.

Also competing in Junior Max, Mawson was unstoppable on his way to victory over fellow Sydneysiders Cameron Hill and Joseph Burton-Harris to claim the 14th state championship of his career.

New South Wales driver Daniel Stein opened an early gap in the final of Leopard Heavy, only to have Arrow driver Lucas Price show some good speed midway through the race to close in on the race leader. The pair came together on the second to last corner which sent Stein spearing off the circuit. Price was later given a five place penalty for his part in an on-track incident handing Walton the win. The trio battled intensely over the final few laps before Edwards was victorious.
