WIMMERA OPEN RACE REPORT
Race Report by Mark "MAV" Cottrell,
A great weekend! Our open meet ran very smoothly, the best type of race meet. We were done and dusted by 2.00pm, presentations by 3.00pm, everything packed up and everybody gone home by 5.00pm. Absolutely brilliant! People who had a way to travel were really appreciative.
We were thanked and congratulated heartily by many for introducing the concept of the P plater trophy.
Hopefully it encourages the recipients to keep going and trying to push further into the main grid to win their next trophy! It is something we will have to build on next year at our open.
Mixed fortunes for our Wimmera Kart Club members. Ashley Lear garnered a 1st in Clubman Light, Kelvin Crane collected 3rd in Clubman Heavy and a sterling result for Braydon Souter, winning the P plater trophy in Midgets. WELL DONE.
Clubman Heavy had the most Wimmera entries. Carbs Souter, Pete Reynolds, Mike Seeary, Leopard Restricted runner Jade Merrett with Owen Perry and Kelvin Crane stepping down from their usual Leopard mounts to contest the category.
With speedsters Scott King and Mike Geist showing up for our meeting, you knew that the competition was going to be fierce.
Owen gave his old TRULLI KART a dust off, bolted on a Yamaha S and put on great showing coming home 4th. It seems that he has become enamoured with the Trulli again...
Kelvin borrowed Mavs chassis and bolted on a freshened up S and looked quick from the get go... until... the engine seized in Saturdays practice and some guy ran over his shoulder! Back in the pits, a quick engine change and the 3rd overall result speaks for itself. He has left a 25.2 time on Mavs Alfano to prove how quick he was (bugger it! now I know that the kart can do it, now I have to match it!).
Mike Seeary had a great weekend coming home 5th overall with consistent performances on the day. Previously struggling in the 25.9s Mike reached deep and banged in mid 25s all day. A great effort!
Mixed fortunes for Pete Reynolds and Shane Souter with being in the wrong position at the wrong time and, in Petes case, tiredness as he was running both Clubman Heavy and Light divisions, making for around 100 racing laps he did on race day. Tough enough! Jade Merrett found the opposition tough and fought hard to gain places from his rear of grid starting positions ruled because of his Leopard restricted engine.
Clubman Light saw Ashley Lear lead the way with clear and complete domination of the category. Fighting a kart not quite suited to the conditions Tony "Flange" Ryan collected his trophy for first P plater home after putting on quite a show for all, while Pete Reynolds found that a 20 kilogram weight penalty makes staying in touch very hard work indeed! (Pete usually runs in Clubman Heavy) Clubman Over 40's racer Leon Forrest showing the visitors the way coming home a confident 1st in the overall classification.
Final category contested by Wimmera racers was MIDGETS with our newest licensed member, BRAYDEN SOUTER, showing the right stuff and collecting his first trophy at his first race meet by being the first P plater home. Hopefully this gets him hungry for more treasure to fill the cabinet that Dad Carbs will be building!
If we keep up this level of race meeting organisation, we are going to find it hard to top ourselves! Probably a good problem to have.
That'll do for now. Thanks to all our sponsors , especially REMO RACING, and all those that helped to make our open meeting the success it was!
